Dilbert's Theorem on Salary
As a D.N.R.C. member, I hope Dilbert doesn't have Dogbert smite me for this possible copyright infringement — I just couldn't bear to lose a portion of his wisdom that I have found to be far, far too true.
Computer professionals, engineers and scientists can never earn as high a salary as business executives and sales people. This theorem can now be supported by a mathematical proof based on the following postulates:
postulate 1: KNOWLEDGE = POWER
postulate 2: TIME = MONEY
as every engineer knows: POWER = WORK / TIME
since KNOWLEDGE = POWER and TIME = MONEY,
we have: KNOWLEDGE = WORK / MONEY
solving for money: MONEY = WORK / KNOWLEDGE
thus, as KNOWLEDGE → 0, MONEY → ∞
regardless of the amount of work done.
postulate 2: TIME = MONEY
as every engineer knows: POWER = WORK / TIME
since KNOWLEDGE = POWER and TIME = MONEY,
we have: KNOWLEDGE = WORK / MONEY
solving for money: MONEY = WORK / KNOWLEDGE
thus, as KNOWLEDGE → 0, MONEY → ∞
regardless of the amount of work done.
Conclusion: the less you know, the more you make. ∎
